General Anaesthesia
Where indicated, we are consulted by our colleagues from other surgical disciplines to provide an anaesthetic and medical service during your surgical procedure. The role of the anaesthesiologist is to ensure your safety and comfort during these procedures. Surgery is not without its risks, but with knowledge of your operation and medical conditions and comprehensive monitoring – timely management by your anaesthesiologist minimizes these risks and contribute to the successful outcome of your operation.
Regional Anaesthesia
In certain operations our partners may advise you that regional anaesthesia or a ‘nerve block’ is indicated. These blocks are expertly performed, often with the help of advanced technology in the form of nerve stimulators and ultrasound machines. These blocks generally increase patient comfort and patient satisfaction during and after your procedure.
Other forms of regional anaesthesia may include the use of epidural and spinal anaesthesia.
Sedative Procedures
Certain procedures such as many plastic surgery and gastroscopy for instance, may not require all the benefits of a full general anaesthesia procedure. In these cases you will be provided with a sedation service by a specialist anaesthesiologist that allows for comfort, pain relief and in some cases an almost complete lack of recall of events during the procedure. Sedation enables day surgery and quick release from hospital.
Perioperative Pain Management
Surgery is often painful. The anaesthesiologist is uniquely qualified with his knowledge of pharmacology and pain medicine to treat your pain after an operation. Several medications that work on different pain mechanisms can be given in combination to increase patient comfort. Also, our regional anaesthesia expertise and the use of patient controlled (PCA) devices are also available where indicated.
Obstetric Anaesthesia & Analgesia
Our obstetric anaesthesia and analgesia service is tasked with providing comfort and timely pain relief for women in labour. The backbone of this service is our provision of epidural analgesia where indicated. Epidural analgesia allows for enhanced comfort and decreased maternal distress during delivery and in some cases may enhance the progress of labour. Feel free to discuss options for pain relief with your gynaecologist or anaesthesiologist.
If you need to have a Caesarian section our team will provide safe anaesthesia and medical care during your operation in the form of either a spinal anaesthesia, epidural anaesthesia or general anaesthesia. An anaesthesiologist monitors your well being and issues medical therapy throughout the caesarian section.
