Pre-anaesthetic Clinic

The aim of the clinic is to prevent unnecessary delay, postponement or cancellation of a patient’s procedure due to incomplete assessment of the patient before the procedure. Patients and medical practitioners might under estimate the impact of their diseases on their health and this pose an increased risk of complications to the patient during and after their surgical procedure.
To minimise risk to the patient, a patient is seen by an anaesthetist in the clinic, well in advance of their procedure. The patient undergoes a full medical and surgical history taking and full medical examination. If appropriate, the patient undergoes further blood testing, heart and lung tests in the form of an ECG, heart ultrasound and lung function testing.
It might be necessary for the anaesthetist to consult with a specialist physician or cardiologist in order to manage or optimise the patients diseases, according to current guidelines.
A comprehensive report is compiled and send to the surgeon involved.
Medical insurers can also consult the clinic to give an opinion with regards to a patients risks and level of health for a specific procedure. This is currently the norm with most knee and hip replacement procedures.
The anaesthetist will charge a specialist consultation fee, payable by the patient or their medical insurer.
Pre-anaesthesia clinics has shown to reduce risks, and be very economical.
This service is pre-booked by the surgeon for the patient. Patients are advised to bring all their medication or a list of their medication with them as well as any relevant reports or recent special investigations that they might have had.
A qualified staff member will ask the patient their medical history and check their vital signs, where after the anaesthetist will see the patient and do a full physical examination. He/she will then explain the planned anaesthesia and any risks involved to the patient. The patient will have ample time to ask any questions or raise any concerns he/she might have about their procedure/anaesthesia.
A typical consultation will last at least 20 minutes but may take up to 40 minutes.
